![]() ![]() ![]() It's not a new hobby (I agree about the coffee machine!) but it's part of my hobby to be able to do things more accurately and it's more enjoyable for me. ![]() As I said, I don't have the same skills as many, but I have, over the years, learned to overcome the limitations of the Unimat to make it produce the things I need. I'd love (if I had the room) to have something really decent like a Myford, but in truth I get by with the Unimat very well. I'm very lucky in that I have a nice workshop to put the lathe in, which not everyone does. I can make little bushes which I can't buy (or make them at a fraction of the cost) and just the other day I made a little turning for a very special model (by a celebrated maker) to replace something that had been lost, and I couldn't have easily done that any other way.Īs has just been said, 3D printing is now seen as the pinnacle of model making, but you can't have a 3D printed wheel without a turned tyre, or at least the ability to fit that tyre very accurately to a centre. I choose to do straight conversions of engines and having absolutely true wheels has made a huge difference to the way that they run. So many simple jobs become simpler and better looking, like axles with nice little turning centres in them, axles turned precisely to length and of course the ability to take an already pretty good component (like a wheel) and make it even better so that the engine works better and it looks much better as it rolls along. I don't have Chris's skills with his little Unimat 3, and I can't do some of the things his machine can do, but having used an ancient SL for many years I wouldn't be without it now. Using a lathe doesn't necessity make you a better model maker, but if you do have one and can learn how to use it it does make many jobs a lot easier. There does, unfortunately, seem to be a theme in this wonderful hobby of ours (surfacing again here) of those who like lathes and those who don't see the need for one. ![]()
